So, when our friends Priscilla and Oliver were moving away they gave us two IKEA dressers.
You can see the before shots in this post...
Aw heck, I'll post them again...
Before:
Then I painted them creme and lightly distressed the edges...
Intermediate Stage:
Then I added hardware...
I added the same octagonal pulls that I have on another dresser that I've re-finished, I like them and they are a good price (from Target).
When I went to put these on though, there was a slight problem...
...when the pull was screwed in as tight as it would go, there was still a space. Not cool.
So I took a paint stick, drilled as many holes in it as I had drawer pulls to install, cut in between the holes with my miter saw, and...
Ta da, we have a pull that is tight.
And now I have the two dressers set up side by side in the new nursery.
The tall one will have a tray on top for incidentals like baby powder and lotion and the lower one will have a changing pad.
So, what do you think?

Those dressers look great Carmen. You are so talented! I can't believe you are going to have a baby; you guys are going to be such adorable parents. Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy, and everything else to, of course.
It looks awesome Carmen! Are you going to be in Utah for Thanksgiving or before Christmas? I am going to be there at both those times (Trina and Alisha's weddings)and I would love to see you. Also, HOW do you repaint furniture - especially ones that already have stain on it and you want it changed to a paint color - like black or white? How do you get the paint to go on smooth? I really want to do a few pieces, but I have no idea how to do it.
Serious bummer, but I won't be in Utah for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Gotta save the moolah for my impending retirement/the upcoming trips required for the wedding(s) of my siblings. Crazy {and happy} that so many of your siblings are going to be hitched.
So, most of my experience has been with painting veneer, but I have painted some wood. I should probably do a whole post on painting furniture, but here's a hodge podge of tips for now.
- sand down and clean, get any loose crap off and take off any shine
- paint on a thin primer coat first
- do many thin coats of paint {using even strokes} as opposed to thick coats. You should be able to see a bunch of the background stuff after the first coat, it'll look terrible then but don't panic.
- if you want it really smooth, lightly sand with a fine grit sandpaper in between coats
Beautiful work!!!!!
that is so awesome, carmen! And I'll bet its a relief to already have some of the baby essentials for his bedroom!
I think it's perfect!
