Mailbox

Yes!!!
We have a mailbox in front of our house.
Until now we've had to go to the temporary bank of mailboxes that are down the road a bit.

(oh, and you see a sneak peek at our grass that we grew from seed. Yeah we're pretty happy that it seems to have worked.)

I think not. I am smitten.

Curt's Family is in the house...

For the past few days we have had the pleasure of having Curt's parents and two little sisters visiting us.
Ron is now on a plane home and Shauna and the girls are on to Canada...but here is a small recap of what we did while they were here.

We started off Friday by doing a long walk around the U of M campus.

Curt in front of the Ross Business School.

Megan, Me, Curt, and Katherine in front of the LDS Institute building.

Walking, walking, walking...

Katherine and Megan in the Reading Room of the Law School.

Megan, same place. It is beautiful there.

Katherine and Megan leaving the Law School.

Shauna.

Enjoying the "soft" Michigan grass.
(Florida has not so soft grass)

Ron and Curt.

Katherine, Shauna, and Megan.

After walking around for a long time, we went to the arb for a picnic lunch.

It was very picturesque.

We then went to Washtenaw Dairy for some of my favoritest ice cream ever.
I'll have to see if Shauna has any pictures of this, because I sure don't.

Saturday was a recovery day consisting of laundry and playing games.

Sunday we went to church...

...and then went to a friend's place for a BBQ on the lake...

...it was beautiful and will get a post of its own later...

And that, my friends, brings us to the present.

Curt and Ron conferring over the GPS and deciding the best route to the airport.

And that concludes this journal entry for today.

Curt's Birthday

So...I don't really have any pictures of Curt growing up so I can't do one of my regular birthday posts. Bummer.
But I can give you the run down on what we did that day (July 14th, if you were wondering)(yeah, I'm really late on this).
We worked. Ooooh, exciting.
Then we went to Shalimar, a most excellent Indian food restaurant. Love the yummy food, we were eating it for the rest of the week.
Then we went to see Wolverine! ...at the dollar theater, that's how we roll.
(it's paying off though, zero debt besides the house, and paying cashola for grad school)
It's the first movie we've seen since Christmas.
Loved it.
I'm a total fantasy/sci fi nerd.
I'm so psyched that they are doing more of these Marvel comics based movies.

Happy Birthday Sweetheart!
You'll always be 3 years more old fogy than me.
(That would make him 28 this time)
Awesome.

Public shame is great motivation...

Remember how my miscellaneous room (aka the third bedroom) recently looked like this?...

...and then I put up some shelves in the laundry room and got to this...

...well, I guess posting a picture of the mess was enough motivation...
(coupled with the fact that the in-laws will be here later this week)
...so it now looks like this...

Awww, no mess.
Goal: someday have furniture.

Laundry Room Re-Do

A little over a week ago I was looking at this...
(ay yai yai, shield your eyes)

...this being the one room in the house that is not put together and as such has become the catch all for miscellaneous decoration items that have yet to be placed and the staging area for projects in process.
Yuck.

And I was thinking to myself, self, where in the world are you going to put all of these tools seeing as how they are the most frequently used and so would be a pain to keep in the garage or basement?

Well, this train of thought must have happened out loud because Curt piped in the fantastic idea of putting it in the laundry room.

Perfect...except the laundry room has no shelving and no floor space to speak of.

And so another project was born.
(picture me smiling with glee)

Well (yet again), I have no before picture.
But I did work up this fancy drawing in paint to show you how it was arranged...
(Dang you AutoCad for being so expensive...leading to me not having you (fist shaking))
That line from the washer pan to the circle on the floor is an emergency drain as our laundry is on the second floor.
There were some major function issues in the layout so I thought this was the perfect time to do some plumbing rework to fix it.
See following drawing on how the room is now arranged.

OK, well I'm getting ahead of myself.
First, I painted the room Lulled Beige (Brian and Shannon, this should be familiar as it is the color on all of your walls). *free* because I had the paint.
Then I painted the wood shelves and brackets black ($38 from IKEA, *free* paint as I already had it).

Then I re-plumbed the drain line from the washer drain pan so that I could move the washer to the far wall.
($10.77 for pipe, pipe elbows, pipe primer, and pipe cement)
To do this I 1) cut all of the pipes to fit and stuck them together to make sure they would work...

...2) primed all the pipe that needed to be cemented together...

...and 3) cemented it together.

Ta da!!! A new drain.
(the white pipe running along the baseboard and into the hole in the floor)

{I am pretty pleased with myself, I painted the whole room without taping anything; I'm getting better at cutting in the lines}

I put up the shelves...

...and filled them up...

...and now the misc. room looks like this...
(more improvements to be made, but it is a good start)

...and I have washer and dryer doors that don't get in each others way...
I l.o.v.e. it.

By the way, I couldn't ask for a better project helper.
He stays out of the way when I'm "doin' stuff", but is right at hand when I need help (like on the off chance I need to move a big.fat.heavy.pretty.washer).

New Toy...

So this week, we got a new toy! I say toy, but it's exactly the kind of thing you have to remind kids that it is NOT a toy. We got a new HD video camera! The best part was the price (free! - thanks to some reward points I racked up at work over the past little while). What's also really cool is that it doesn't use CD's or tapes to record to. It's all stored electronically, so no rewinding needed, you just search through the recorded files.

So, now you'll maybe start to see some cool videos on the blog. As soon as 1 - we figure out how to upload them (probably not too challenging), and 2 - we have something cool enough to record (slightly more challenging).

I needed a change so I took drastic measures.

North Carolina

Last December we attended the wedding of Curt's good friend Ryan to Kao Nu.
Well, Kao Nu has a lot of family, many of which are out of the country; so they had a full blown reception this past weekend in North Carolina (where Ryan and Kao Nu live).
We're always up for attending these kind of things, so we jumped in the car and drove down for the party.

Me, Kao Nu, Ryan, Curt
Sorry, I didn't have the flash turned on, so even with some tweaking the picture isn't that great.

They had spent hours decorating the church.
Kao Nu is Mong and her family is from Laos. They served traditional food, yummy.
Half of the program was in the Mong language, which was entertaining.

The party was great, but so was the drive.
We drove through Ohio, West Virginia, and part of Virginia to get there. It was my first time seeing any of the Virginias.

So, here is a small sampling of the pictures I took while Curt was driving:

Can you tell I love bridges?

The capital building in Charleston.

Charleston is a funny/beautiful city that has been built right on top of a river and surrounded by steep hills (see below).

Something that made me smile:
Friday our flowers on our front porch looked like this...

...and Sunday when we got home they looked like this...

...{Beauty}...

...and we had a couple of these dainty things...
gosh I love flowers
